This is where profession-based learning (Pro-BL) comes in, offering a practical, hands-on approach to education that bridges the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.

I want to share my experience working with students in a profession-based program, CAPS, where I engage with them about the global food industry, business, and science. Over the past 11 years, I’ve seen the impact of Pro-BL on students, not only in well-known fields like medicine, engineering, nursing, and law but also in areas such as graphic design, global business, veterinary medicine, animal science, robotics, food science, marketing, and journalism. The enthusiasm of teachers, forward-thinking leaders, and proactive industry coaches and mentors has been incredibly inspiring, leading me to join the advisory board of CAPS.

The Importance of Profession-Based Learning

Profession-based learning provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding and retention of the material. This is key for young minds and talents to be exposed to and helps inform their thinking of potential career paths.

As my career developed over time, from scientist in the lab to product management in business, to leading strategy and now as Chief Marketing and Digital Officer, I have found the that being deeply involved in the CAPS program, has afforded me to see firsthand the profound impact it has on students and industries alike. Watching students transform into confident, skilled professionals ready to take on the challenges of the modern workforce is incredibly rewarding. The connections they build, the skills they acquire, and the experiences they gain set them up for success in ways traditional education simply cannot.
